Barkston Heath was established as a grass Relief Landing Ground for RAF Cranwell in 1941-43, before being developed with hard runways for RAF Bomber Command in 1943-44. It was used by the transport aircraft of the Ninth Air Force's 61st Troop Carrier Group and 349th Troop Carrier Group, before being handed back to the RAF in 1945. It is still an RAF airfield today.
