Joseph Hartley was killed in action in B-24H #42-95010 'Crow's Nest' on his final mission. Hartley was KIA when he was hit in the head by 20mm cannon fire from attacking German fighters. The wounded co-pilot was able to bring the aircraft back to England, landing at the 357th FG base at Leiston. He was engaged to Dorothy Newman.

Dorothy's great-niece writes:

"It was a great love story - they were saving for a home for when he returned and they would be married. The letters, the love, it's so great. My great Aunt always spoke about his plane, The Crow's Nest - and on the front of it was a woman with red hair - it may have said Rhode Island Red - or at least that's what they nicknamed it. It was after my Aunt Dot with her big red hair. My Aunt Dot is 97 and still going strong."
