The B-24D, 41-23745, named, Katy Bug, was assigned to the 8th Air Force, the 93rd Bomb Group, and the 328th Bomb Squadron at Alconbury, Britain. On 18 Nov, 1942, it was dispatched on a mission to bomb the U-Boat pens at Lorient, France. Upon landing, the pilot was forced to abort the landing and go around and strayed out of the landing pattern. During that maneuver, the number 1 and 2 engines failed. The pilot, 2nd Lt. Alfred Asch, then, attempted to make another landing at Little Stukeley, about a mile west of the Alconbury airbase. This time, the plane's right wing struck a tree, and the aircraft crashed, killing four of the crew. 4 Killed On Mission - 4 KIA - 6 Returned To Duty - 6 RTD. Nov 18, 1942.
