Military ROLL OF HONOUR

Joe Costello attended 4 years of High School in Texas and joined the Air Corps in 1942. Sent overseas, he was assigned to the 92nd Bomb Group / 407th Bomb Squadron as an aerial gunner. Serving as Bombardier on the 14 October 1943 Schweinfurt mission in B-17 #42-30726 he was killed in the plane's explosion. Killed in Action (KIA).

14 October 1943 Co-Pilot McIntosh reported that the plane was on fire and that he was blown out when it exploded. He said Castillo was still in the aircraft at the time of the explosion.

Initially buried in Germany, his remains were brought back to the United States after the war. He rests in Section E Site 9549 and his grave mentions the 97th Bomb Group...
