Shelton Wilson Monroe
MilitaryCaptain Monroe was from Waycross, Georgia. He entered the 4th Fighter Group, 334th Squadron in January 1944, where he was assigned until January 1945, when he was transferred to the 335th Squadron until April 1945. In April he was transferred to the 4th R & R Squadron on detached service ferrying P-51Ds to Sweden, where he acted as an advisor to the Swedish Air Force.
While with the 4th Fighter Group he had been Assistant Squadron operations and gunnery Officer and later Group Operations Officer.
His combat record was 8.8 enemy aircraft destroyed, and he was awarded the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross [3 Oak Leaf Clusters], and the Air Medal [14 Oak Leaf Clusters], PH, WWII Victory, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
He was subsequently killed in action during the Korean war.
