Noel Robert Moss
MilitaryDaughter Susan Imgrund
Noel “Micky” Moss trained at Falcon Field on Course 24 starting on 20 November 1944 and graduated on 16 June 1945.
Micky was brought up in the village of Bearsted, Kent. As a boy, he witnessed the Battle of Britain raging in the skies above him. He had his first experiences of flight as a schoolboy in the Maidstone Grammar School’s ATC. His war experiences in the UK included joining the local Home Guard and helping to clear V1 flying “buzz” bomb damage in London.
Following training at Falcon Field, Micky enjoyed a long and varied career in the RAF. The late 1940s saw him in the Far East, where he flew Sunderland flying boats. He qualified as a Flying Instructor in the 1950s and was posted to No. 3 FTS in Gimli, Manitoba, Canada – and it is here that he met a young RCAFW Pilot Officer, Ann, who would become his wife.
Micky’s further postings would include Aden in the 1960s, together with Ann and the couple’s young children, Susan and Michael. Micky’s later responsibilities with the RAF included an MOD role in London, as well as tutor at RAF Bracknell Individual Studies School.
Micky’s contribution and service to the RAF in the area of training was recognised in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List, 1977, with the award of the OBE.
In his retirement, Micky spent many happy hours as a volunteer at Brooklands Museum, helping restore “R for Robert”, a Wellington bomber that had crashed into Loch Ness in 1940.
