DFC award: "Capt Bunnell was commander of one of the formations that participated in the assault on the Politz oil works. In an effort to turn turn back the attackers, the Nazi put up an intense anti-aircraft barrage over the target and obscured the objective with a high effective smokescreen. The 27 year old pilot courageously flew into the thick of the flak and held his squadron in such tight formation that the target suffered extreme damage and probably was destroyed. Due to the airmanship and air discipline exercised by Capt Bunnell, the formation suffered very small losses despite the heavy opposition."
Awards: DFC, AM (4OLC), EAME (2BS), WWII Victory.
