B-17G 44-8216 took off, with a crew of 11, from Grafton-Underwood, England on a bombing mission over Cologne, Germany. Over the target they are believed to have been hit by ground anti-aircraft fire. While returning to base they are believed to have been damaged and to have crashed into the North Sea.
