George Edward Bonitz

Lt George Bonitz was 2nd Navigator on the Merseburg mission of 20 July 1944, on board B-17 #42-97564. Hit by Flak, the plane made a forced landing between Chaam and Baarle-Hertog, South of Tilburg, The Netherlands. Evaded (EVD). Helped by Dutch and Belgian citizens and members of the Résistance, he was hidden in many places in Belgium, the last one being Brussels until the city was liberated by British troops. He was back in the UK on 9 September 1944 and rejoined his unit. He stayed a few years in the Air Force and ended his military career as a Lt Colonel in the USAF.
