MilitaryBTG, Painter crew. 381st BG, 532nd BS, 8th AF. Shot down 17 August 1943 in B-17 #42-30140 'King Malfunction II'. Mission #20 "Black Tuesday" to the ball bearing works at Schweinfurt, Germany. Wounded in the right leg while in the aircraft. Had met up with 1Lt Nelson (CP), S/Sgt Genz (RWG) and S/SGT Whitman (LWG) after bailing out. His wounds were too severe to continue evading. They agreed that he and S/SGT Whitman who was also injured would turn themselves in to the Germans. The other two continued to evade and made it back to England. MACR 379.
