1916th Ordnance Ammunition Company
Company
1916th Ordnance Company was established around June of 1942 near Bury Saint Edmunds. The base was shared with an existing R.A.F. bomber or fighter group.
The
1916th shared mess hall and shower facilities with the R.A.F. and lived in tents until they could build their own facilities... They received bombs presumably by rail, hid them in the woods then shipped them to one of about eight bomber groups in the area. The bombs were transported by an all African American quartermaster (trucking) as everything was racially segregated.
