Stone (Jefferson Hall)

Military site

Seven camps named after British Admirals: Beatty - AAF 518, Duncan -AAF 509, Howard, Jefferson - AAF 594, Nelson, Drake, Frobisher and Raleigh, were constructed to accommodate workers moved from the Woolwich Arsenal, London to Swynerton ROF (Royal Ordnance Filling) factory. Instead, the camps were used to process troops arriving in England from Liverpool prior to being sent to their units. These huge camps originally intended to deal with a maximum of 2000 men each, could eventually process influxes of 32,000 men.
