Detailed History

From Fowey Mayor Ruth Finlay:
"During 1943-1944, Fowey was a US Naval Advanced Amphibious Training sub base as well as a US Hospital Training base. On 16 May 1944 Commander Snell of the US Navy expressed his wish to leave a permanent memento of their stay in Fowey. A memorial shelter was built, just above the beach and contains a brass memorial plaque from the US Navy."
