Shot down by fighters on a mission to Erkner, Berlin on 8 Mar 1944 in B-17G #42-37954 'Hank from Dixie'. Prisoner of War (POW). He was placed into a German prison camp and was treated like the Jews. He would stand in a line and watch lower ranked soldiers get their eyes poked until they would bleed. Was served moldy bread and cheese from time to time. Was placed in the box cars and transported to other camps. He also was in a cell with an Italian soldiers who he became friends with during his time as a POW. He documented a lot of his journey of a POW in a diary that the Nazi's gave him. The camp he was taken to was Stalag Luft 4 Gross Tychow Formerly Heydekrug Pomerania Prussia then was Moved To Wobbelin Bei Ludwigslust To.
