Frank Mitchell

Frank Mitchell was Co-Pilot on B-17 #42-39781, shot down on the 1 December 1943 mission to Solingen, Germany. Helped by French citizens and members of the Résistance, he was fed, clothed, sheltered and transported in Lille, Tourcoing, Paris, Bordeaux, Dax in the South of France. He was helped across the Pyrénées mountains and arrived in Spain on 20 April 1944. Guided to Gibraltar, which he reached on 29 May. Left Gibraltar by air on 1 June 1944, landing the same day in Bristol, UK. See his Escape & Evasion report E&E 700 at https://catalog.archives.gov/id/5555340 (NARA). He served also in Korea and ended his Air Force career with the rank of Major.
