Fred E Sayre

Lt. Fred Sayre was Lt. Robert Lee Wright's copilot, flying the B-24D Liberator, 42-40776, Old Blister Butt, on Operation Tidal Wave, the raid on Ploesti. He bombed his target refinery and returned safely to Benghazi, Libya. 1 August 1943,



After TDY to the 9th Air Force and the B-24D, 42-40697, he was hit by flak over his target at the Reggio Marshalling Yards. Diverted to recently captured area of Sicily. Crash landed NW of Pachino. A Canadian unit transported the crew to a friendly base. Crew originally reported Missing in Action (MIA). 12 July 1943
