McColl was aged 27 when this photo was taken, the son of a Republican state senator. He was married and had a 1-year-old son at home in Idaho. He was killed in May 1943, when his aircraft went into a spin and ditched into the North Sea. After his death, his wife Virginia worked in the local Safeway supermarket. Five years later, she remarried.
