Shot Down/Evaded

near Gricigliana Railroad Bridge, Italy 22 June 1944 His a/c took a direct flak hit, that killed the pilot. He was able to keep the plane under control long enough to give the remaining crew a chance to bail out. Unfortunately two were already dead, one bailed out and was never seen again and one bailed out on fire and did not open his parachute. George and the bombardier were able to make it safely to the ground. After evading for several weeks he was able to return to Allied lines.
