23 January 1945 | While on the bomb run, Ackerson's ship was hit by flak which injured the pilot and almost severed one of Ackerson's legs. Despite these serious injuries they continued their bomb run achieving excellent results. Ackerson was awarded the Silver Star for heroism. His leg later had the be amputated. | |
