Truman was born on January 17, 1924 to the late Herman and Louise Smith in Guthrie Oklahoma. He graduated from Ponca City High School in 1942. After graduation from Ponca City High School, Truman joined the United States Air Corps. He received his wings in October 1943, prior to his assignment as a B-17 bomber pilot. Between April 8th and July 28th, 1944, Truman would fly 35 successful missions over Germany, France and Poland while piloting "Barbara B", "Pride of the Yankees" and other B-17 Flying Fortresses all before the age of 21. For his actions he received the Distinguished Flying Cross. He received 13 decorations during the war, other awards include the Air Medal with Silver Cluster and three Campaign Stars for the air battle over Europe, invasion of that continent and air support to the Allies. When he finished his overseas tour as a B-17 pilot in Europe in February of 1945, he was assigned to Langley Field, Va. After active duty Truman flew PBY Flying Boats in the Great Amazonas Valley and the Andes of South America as a commercial pilot for the Reconstruction Finance Corporation of the US Government, for the development of the rubber industry. In January of 1946, Truman had come back to the states and was accepted into the then famous Pasadena Playhouse, California State School of Theater Arts and graduated in 1948, to become director at KTTV Los Angeles times-CBS Hollywood. In 1952, Smith was called back into the US Air Force to help develop TV during the Korean War, and in 1953 was sent to Germany to establish and command the 7122 Television support squadron for Europe, North Africa and the Near East. In 1955, while in Germany Truman met the love of his life, Margot. They were married in August of 1956 in Wiesbaden, Germany and Moved to Ponca City in 1958 where he was part owner of Smitty's Clothing Store with his father Herman and brother John. Truman remained true to his passion for filmmaking and writing even while working at Smitty's. In 1960 he won two Silver medals at the Cannes Film Festival for "The Rattlesnake Hunt at Okeen" and for "Der Ball." Truman was appointed to the Oklahoma Film Advisory Commission by Lt. Governor George Nigh. He worked closely with OU Journalism Professor Ned Hockman for a conference titled "Behind the Screens of Hollywood." Truman also worked closely with Bob Westmoreland and the late artist Walt Harris to make "Bride of the Morning Star" a memorial television program commissioned in 1977 by the Bicentennial Commission of Ponca City. Smith directed a feature length movie "Red, White and Black", which was all filmed in and around the Ponca City area. In 1996, Truman had his book published, "The Wrong Stuff", the Adventures and Mis-Adventures of an 8th Air Force Aviator. His book has been used in history classes at the United States Air Force Academy and is currently being used for history classes at Texas Tech University. In March of 2010 Truman was honored once again for his aviation accomplishments by the Department of Transportation Federal Aviation Administration with The Wright Brothers "Master Pilot" Award. Truman and Margot were married 54 years and would have celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary in August 2011. Truman was always happiest with family and friends, he loved to tell a great story and make others smile. He is survived by his wife Margot of the home, one daughter Simone Strah and her husband David of Ponca City, one son Rex Smith of Tulsa, three granddaughters Heather, Kayla and Rylee and two grandsons Ryan and Ian. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother John Smith. Military Honors will be provided by the United States Air Force. Honorary casket bearers include: Rex Smith, Ryan Smith, David Strah, Jeff Smith and Don Hatfield
