Major General Harold L. Price is the director of military assistance and sales, Deputy Chief of Staff, Systems and Logistics, Headquarters U.S. Air Force.



General Price was born in 1918, in Potter, N.Y., where he attended grade and high schools. He graduated from Pennsylvania State College in 1941 with a bachelor of arts degree; received a master's degree from The George Washington University in 1963; and attended the Air Command and Staff School in 1953, and the National War College in 1962-1963.



General Price entered active military service as an aviation cadet in 1941. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps in February 1942. During World War II from February 1942 to April 1944, General Price was a flight commander and flew P-40 aircraft with the 313th Fighter Squadron and Beaufighters with the 414th Night Fighter Squadron. He went overseas with the 414th Squadron and served with the squadron in England, North Africa, and Sardinia, flying 67 combat missions. He returned to the United States in May 1944 and occupied several command and staff positions until November 1945 at Hammer Field, Calif. In April 1946 he was released from active duty and went to work for Eastern Airlines in Orlando, Fla.



He returned to active duty in June 1948 and was assigned to the Fighter Procurement Division in Headquarters Air Materiel Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.



General Price was reassigned in February 1949 to the Far East Air Forces, where he was operations officer for the 8th Fighter Wing and commander of the 80th Fighter Squadron. During the Korean War, he flew 75 combat missions and was credited with four YAK-9s destroyed, one Mig-15 probably destroyed, and one Mig-15 damaged.



In February 1952 he returned to the United States and was assigned to the 132d Fighter Bomber Wing at Dow Air Force Base, Maine, and served as support group commander. He remained with the wing when it was transferred to England Air Force Base, La., and became deputy commander of a fighter group. From September 1953 to October 1955 he was assigned to the U.S. Air Ground Operations School at Southern Pines, N.C.



In November 1955 General Price went to Germany and served with Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Operations, as an operations officer and became chief, Contingency Plans Division. During 1958 he also was deputy for plans for the commander in chief, specified command, Middle East for Lebanon operations.



General Price returned to the United States in August 1959 and was assigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Plans and Programs, as a plans and programs officer and became chief, Contingency Plans Division. He was transferred to the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in January 1961 as a member of the J-5 Contingency Plans Division. From August 1962 to June 1963, General Price attended the National War College in Washington, D.C., and then was assigned as assistant deputy for operations, Ninth Air Force, at Shaw Air Force Base, S.C.



In June 1964 he went to the Republic of Vietnam, served as director of operations, 2d Air Division, and completed 87 combat missions. In July 1965 he was assigned as commander, 354th Tactical Fighter Wing, at Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, S.C.



In November 1966 General Price returned to Washington, D.C., as an operations and staff officer in the Directorate of Inspection Services in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense. He became chief, Air Force Section, Military Assistance Advisory Group, Iran, in July 1969.



General Price was assigned as the director of Military Assistance and Sales in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Systems and Logistics, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C., in August 1972.



His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, Distinguished Flying Cross with two oak leaf clusters, Soldier's Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal with 11 oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal, Air Force Distinguished Unit Citation Emblem with oak leaf cluster, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon, and the Republic of Vietnam Air Force Distinguished Service Cross. He is a command pilot.



He was promoted to the grade of major general effective April 2, 1973, with date of rank Aug. 1, 1969.
