466th BG Historian

Object Number - UPL 30640 - Carrol Bogard, 466th Bomb Group.

He initially hoped to be a pilot but failed the eye test. Instead he went to Aerial Gunnery School at Harlingen TX and after training shipped to England on the 'Queen Elizabeth' to join the 466th at Attlebridge. On August 8th 1944 his crew were not scheduled to fly but were called in at the last minute without a briefing or escape kits. After bombs away over the target they took a direct hit in the bomb bay, fuel poured through the plane, the hydraulics became inoperable and the pilot ordered them to bail out. Bogard landed near a German gun emplacement and found himself surrounded by about 25 'Krauts' pointing their guns at him. He was eventually sent to Stalag Luft 14 at St Wendel. He -along with all POWs- was moved west as the Russians advanced and crowded into another camp. On 5th February 1945 they were told to evacuate that camp and walked across N. Germany until 4th May -with little food or shelter - until being liberated by the British 7th Army near Hamburg.

After being discharged he took a degree in Economics and taught in Inwood Iowa before taking a Masters and later becoming Assistant Principal and Principal in the Iowa school system.

Awards: AM, PH, POW, GCM, ACM, EAME w/1 campaign star, WW II Victory Medal
