Belterwijde, Netherlands | 23 March 1944 | Tennessee S/Sgt Army Air Forces World War 11 Shot down March 23, 1944 over The Netherlands;found by friendly Dutchmen who buried him in Vollenhove, The Netherlands. He was later moved to an American military cemetery in Margraten. After the war, his body was returned to his home town of Dyer, and buried with military honors. Son of Kennerley Ewell Thompson and May Sturdivant Thompson King. FROM THE TRI-CITY REPORTER: Final services will be held next Sunday afternoon, Jan 23, at 2:30 at the Dyer Cumberland Church for Sgt. Milton Ewell Thompson, who lost his life in World War II. Rev B F Warren, of Milan, a former pastor of the Dyer Church will conduct the service, assisted by Rev G P McIllwain and Rev H G Finley, of Dyer. Military services will be in charge of the Dyer American Legion. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Baird Bros. in charge of arrangements. Sgt Thompson, son of Mr and Mrs K E Thompson of Dyer, was a tail gunner on a Liberator B-24 when he was shot down March 23, 1944. He was 21. He was born in Dyer and lived here all his life with the exception of a short while when he was employed at Fisher Aircraft Division in Memphis before entering the Air Force in March, 1943. He was a graduate of Dyer High School and the Wm R Moore School of Technology in Memphis. He went overseas in Feb, 1944 and was based in England. Besides his parents, he leaves one sister, Miss Dixie Thompson. |
