He was taken from gunnery school at Ft. Myers, FL halfway through the course and went to Scotland on a ferried B-17. He arrived at the 306th as a Sergeant. On 08 June 1943. He was assigned to Capt. Fuhrmeister crew. Flew first mission on 09 June 1943. When Fuhrmeister found out he was never trained he was taken from the crew and sent to radio school on the base; this was after 7 missions. Then he flew with all different crews until being shot down 29 July 1943 in B-17 #425766 flying with B. H. Brown. Prisoner of War (POW) at Stalag 17B Braunau Gneikendorf Near Krems Austria 48-15.
