Ground personnel of the 91st Bomb Group walk back to base after their B-17 Flying Fortress failed to return from its mission. Printed caption on reverse: 'Saidman (Illus.). 28.6.43. A Fortress That Did Not Return. OPS.2a. One less ship came home. The ground crew counted them as they came in and checked the identification of each Fortress. The crew waits in the dispersal area for three hours. It is almost dark when the crew chief says, "Well, guys..." and they walk slowly back to the hanger, carrying their tool boxes which they have always stored in the plane, and the hatch cover - all they have left.'
