Colonel Hubert Zemke of the 56th Fighter Group practices his shooting on a pistol range at Halesworth, 1943. Zemke has handwritten on the reverse: 'Halesworth, 1943. A favourite sport of Col. Z throughout his life. It is interesting to note that we had fighter pilots who trained and combated in P-47s with eight machine guns, yet when checked on the skeet and pistol range flinched at the explosion of a weapon.' This airman or officer is holding a trench gun which is a type of Winchester 12 gauge shotgun made in 1897 and saw action extensively in WW1 and WW2. The reason he might be carrying this is because it is small and can be fitted in the aircraft and if they crashed they could still fight with relative effectiveness.
