On 14 Sept 43 P47 42-8455 crashed on take-off on an operational flight from Steeple Morden.



On 7-Nov-43 as pilot of P-47D 42-8477, 355FG/358FS while on return from a mission to provide escort to B-26s from 9th Air Force attacking the German airfields at Montdidier and Mulan, France his aircraft ran into headwinds of over 100mph which caused excessive use of fuel. He was forced to crash land in a field near Caen, France when he ran out of fuel. He was captured as a Prisoner of War (POW).
