61 missions. St. Lo. Bombing patrol 7/25/44, Anklam Airfield Strafing at Peenemunde 8/4/44, Arnheim/Nijmegan patrol 9/19/44. Escort B-17s to Warsaw Poland 9/18/44, two group leads and several squadron leads survived crash landing 10/29/44 when engine failed near Peterborough. Participated in Kassel mission 9/27/44 when 376th FS destroyed 18 FW-190s in air for ETO record by one FS. (High loss mission for 445th BG B-24s on that day. ) Escorted RAF Lancasters in daylight raid, 2/45. Escorted B-17s, B-24s, A-26s, B-26s, etc. Flew P-40s, P-51s, P-47s, approx. 700 hours total, Class AAA, Spence Field, Moultrie, GA 1/7/44

Wilmington, DE, USA | 7 April 2012 | Bob was a graduate of PS duPont High School, and received a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Delaware in 1949, and later received his Professional Engineer License. Bob served our country as a fighter pilot in the Army Air Corps where he was the rank of a Captain. After WWII, Bob worked for Wilmington Trust in the Accounting Department, was a designer for Gronemeyer, then spent 30 years at DuPont in the Design Division working on HVAC and textile fibers projects. His last position was Senior Project Engineer at Louviers. Bob took early retirement March 31, 1981. Bob was active in many organizations including, St Stephen's Lutheran Church, 361st Fighter Group, Assoc. of Professional Engineers, and the P-51 Mustang Pilots Association. |
