Other Shot Down/WIA |
Brunswick, Germany | 8 April 1944 | Carroll was flying as waist gunner on this mission. A German fighter made a firing pass that wounded Carroll on his right hand between the thumb and index finger. All the flesh was ripped away. Due to loss of blood, Carroll passed out wearing only his parachute harness. The waist gunner, SSGT Edward Whaley picked up Carroll's chest pack parachute, strapped it on him, then picked the still unconscious man up and pitched him out of the waist window, while holding on to the D ring of Carroll's parachute. Carroll regained consciousness before reaching the ground and survived the incident. |
