Lt. Oscar Williamson was the command pilot of the B-17G, 42-37985, The Saint. He was hit by flak and left his formation with one engine damaged and trailing smoke, headed for Sweden and made a forced landing. He successfully landed, and he and the crew were interned by the Swedes, (INT). Aug 9 44. The plane was subsequently repaired and was recovered later in May 1945. In July 1944, Lt. Williamson and his crew were exchanged and returned from Sweden.
On 9/10/44, Lt. Williamson was shot down in the B-17G, I'll Be Around, 43-37603, and crashed near Laubental, Germany. He was, first, listed as missing in action (MIA), but was captured and became a prisoner of war at Stalag Luft 1, and later listed as a POW. He was the only 96th Bomb Group pilot to become Missing In Action (MIA), twice.
