Max Eugene Dowden
MilitaryMax Dowden had enlisted in the RCAF (Royal Canadian Air Force) before the United States' entry in WW II. He was a pilot and flew with RAF Squadron No. 625 based at Kelstern, Lancashire, United Kingdom. He was killed on the 21-22 May 1944 raid to Duisburg, Germany. Another crew member, RAF Flight Engineer Sgt Francis Harold Rowlands Moody, aged 19, was also killed. Both are reported to first have been buried in a temporary military cemetery at Borsbeek, near Antwerp, Belgium and subsequently re-interred at the Schoonselhof Cemetery in Antwerp. There is no uncertainty as to the remains of Sgt Moddy, which are buried there. There are 3 unidentified graves in the cemetery and grave 4A E27 has a stone bearing "Believed to be Lieutenant M. E. Dowden". Max Dowden is still officially listed as Missing in Action (MIA) at http://www.dpaa.mil/OurMissing/WorldWarII/wwii_main.aspx?br=aaf&a=d
