media-38739.jpeg UPL 38739 Enlisting on 10 October 1942 in Ft. Jackson (Columbia), SC, Lt. Leonard D. Carter flew with the 368th Fighter Squadron beginning on 4 August 1944. Credited with one aerial victory and two damaged, Lt. Carter was assigned to 60 combat missions before ending his tour of duty with the 359th Fighter Group on 3 March 1945.

On September 12th [1944] we furnished ramrod support for the 1st A.T.F., 1st Bomb Division hitting targets at Brux, near Berlin. R/V was made in vicinity North Hamburg at 1020 and maintained escort until 1145 when we were intercepted by 25 plus Me 109s in the vicinity North Berlin. In the fight that ensued Capt. King Destroyed 1 Me 109. Lt. Beal destroyed 1 Me 109, and Lt. Barth destroyed another. Lt. Hatter destroyed 2 FW 190s and damaged an Me 109. Lt. Carter destroyed a FW 190 and damaged another. Two of our pilots failed to return from this mission, 2nd Lt. Louis E. Barnett and 2nd Lt. James H.
