MilitaryImage uploaded on behalf of Jerry Bitting, Son
Bitting enlisted as a Private during the First World War and fought in the four major battles in France. He was awarded the Purple Heart and other medals and received a battlefield commission as a Lieutenant. He always loved being known as "Private Bitting."
On 8 December 1941, his 44th birthday, Bitting re-enlisted as a Captain in the US Army Air Corps. From Wright Patterson Field in Dayton Ohio he was shipped to England as Director of Personnel for the 8th Air Corps, and beginning in 1944 for the USSTAF, receiving the US Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the French Legion D'Honneur with Oakleaf Cluster(two), the Order of the British Empire and others.
After Victory in Europe arrived on May 10, 1945, Bitting and his colleagues produced a Proclamation signed by each member of the USSTAF for Personnel.
