Military"Iowans of the Mighty Eighth", Chapter 22 "Biographies", by Charles D Taylor.
Humke crew.
A farmer by occupation he enlisted in November 1943 then trained as a gunner. In August 1944 he joined the Group at Horsham St Faith flying on 28 missions. On his very first- target Perleburg Germany - the wings iced up over Belgium, the aircraft went into a dive and the pilot ordered a bail out. He landed in a pasture and saw civilians rushing at them with pitchforks thinking they were Germans. Luckily some GI's arrived in time and they were flown back to base unharmed. After his discharge he ran his own electrical business and in his spare time built, then flew, his own airplane for twenty years.
