Strait of Messina, Italy 16 August 1943 His B-25 was shot down by flak Must report today that one of our ships flown by Captain Flack [James L. Flack] of the 487th was lost over the Messina Straits [Also lost: Lt. Jonathan Leete and Lt. Sidney C. Ormsbee]. It is believed that all of the crew were able to parachute from the burning aircraft after it had been hit smack in the middle by large bursts of ack-ack.
