John Elmer Coenen
MilitaryAssigned to 63FS, 56FG, 8AF USAAF. On a return flight from Liverpool's Speke airfield in P-47 41-6227 on 25-Apr-43, encountered lower than forecast cloud and attempted to divert to Burtonwood. A/C went into spin in cloud and crashed at Rushup Edge, Derbyshire. Coenen baled out, damaging chute in the process, landing heavily and suffered fractured spine. Hospitalised as result of injury. Re-assigned to 63FS, 56FG, 8AF USAAF. Returning to the fray, bagged 2 x Fw190's. Later,the effects of his spinal injuries caused him to be removed from flying status.
