Irving Shapiro

Military

With 410 BS 94th BG the target for Flight Engineer Shapiro's 3rd mission April 10th 1945 was apparently to Brandenburg. Instead of a ball turret gunner the B-17 that day had a 'Mickey' dome - or Pathfinder - and a Radar Operator. As they approached the target the pilot ordered the radar man to throw out the chaff, seconds later a large piece of flak hit the spot where the radar operator's head would have been. Another piece went through the wing and damaged an engine. They limped home on three engines and just made it by throwing out all the heavy items and transferring the gas from the feathered engine. The landing back at base was tricky, next day the Crew Chief found some 60 lbs of flak still in the plane.
