France 22 June 1944 22 June 1944: Briefing for dive-bombing mission took place at 1245, planes to fly to Charly sur Marne. At Charly sur Marne planes attacked railroad bridge from 500 feet. 24 500 lb. GP bombs were dropped on target, but no damage was observed done to the bridge. Bombs strikes were, however, observed in the water and in woods above bridge. Some bombs appeared to hit bridge and bounce off without exploding. Intense flak experienced in target area. Airdromes in vicinity of Roy-Villers appeared to be in good shape, as if they had never been bombed or had been well repaired. Lt. Grimes and Lt. Hollis did not return from the mission and were neither seen nor heard from since planes were over target area. Lt. Ambrose reported having seen Lt. Grime's A/C explode on the ground after bursting into flame in air vicinity of Nanteuil sur Marne.
