George Roscoe Burris Jr
MilitaryGeorge was born on 17 April 1915 in Bethany, Missouri.
He registered for the WW II draft on 16 October 1940, and he was listed as self-employed on a farm in Pueblo, Colorado. He was 5' 8" tall; weighed 135 pounds; had brown hair, blue eyes and a 'light complexion'. Also noted on the top of the face of the registration card: "Inf, Res., 2nd. Lieut.".
According to his obituary, he enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1938 and became a Glider Pilot; it appears from his Registration Card entry, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry Reserve, prior to him joining the Army Air Force (the United States Army Air Forces did not become a separate service until 1947).
We have him listed as participating in two 437th flights as a Glider Pilot: Mission ELMIRA on 06 June 1944; and during Operation VARSITY in March 1945. The WWII Glider Pilots Association also has George listed as participating in the MARKET-GARDEN Operation in Holland.
His headstone indicates he remained in the military and was involved in WW II, Korea and Vietnam. He retired in 1975 as a Lieutenant Colonel.
