Edward P Winslow
MilitaryUploaded
Shot down 17 August 1943 in B-17 #42-2990 'Dame Satan', Prisoner of War (POW).
Winslow was shot down near Brussels and broke his leg upon landing. A local farmer found him and told him to lie low until a German search party had passed. The farmer then returned and carried him to a shed behind his barn. That evening he was transported on a home-made stretcher to a larger farm and put to bed to await the doctor who put his leg in a cast. He was then moved several times in makeshift ambulances, eventually staying with an elderly couple for two months, being treated as though he was their own son. One day he got a visit from a member of the Resistance movement -L'Arme Blanche - who told him about the rest of his crew. Some months after the crash, when his leg had healed, he was moved - with another escapee - to the town of Ath, where they were treated royally. A week later a man and an 'attractive' girl came to escort them to Brussels. The girl came on the train with them and, in Brussels, handed them over to two men who - it turned out - were agents of the Gestapo. Winslow arrived at Stalag Luft 1 on 4th December 1943, where he was to spend the rest of the war.
