Wounded on 2nd Schweinfurt Raid 14 October 1943, Black Thursday. When the aircraft in which he was serving was heavily attacked by large number of enemy aircraft, Sergeant. Fox was painfully wounded by fragments of a cannon shell which exploded near his gun position. In spite of his severe pain and loss of blood, Sergeant. Fox remained at his post of duty for the duration of the one and one-half hour running battle against enemy fighteres, relinquishing his position only after all danger from enemy attack had ceased. After emergency treatment at the dispensary, he was moved to a Base Hospital, Oxford, England. He returned to the states March 9, 1944 and was hospitalized for 18 months at Deshon Hospital, Butler, PA. He completed 13 missions. He flew on Robert Hoyt/John Noack crew.
DSC/ Air Medal w/ 2 Oak Leaf Cluster/ Purple Heart
In 2002/3 he was President of the Second Schweinfurt Memorial Association.
