Donald Shickel
Military11 Aug 44 saved crew by flying damaged B-24 home after bombing mission. 'We Weary Warriors' Their B-24 was badly damaged and crew member Harold Haight (the tail gunner) was badly injured. The crew made the decision to try to return to base rather than be interned. They made it successfully. Their plane was scrapped. A commanding officer commented that he did not know how the plane made it in (as did the crew). Don Shickel the pilot was later awarded the DFC for his efforts and somehow getting the crew home
