A farmer before the war he joined up a week after the attack on Pearl Harbour and after training was deployed overseas to the 475th sub-depot at Mendlesham, attached to the 34th BG. He was responsible for major repair work, wrecked planes were cannibalized as replacement aircraft were slow in coming and the ground crews worked round the clock. He was later employed by the US Dept of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service.
