Official records show, then First Lt., Whitener's award cards reflect a Silver Star and a Distinguished Flying Cross for the 1 Aug. 1943 low-level Ploesti raid issued under the same general order. The actual published general order reflects he received the DFC for the mission, although recommended for the SS. No SS citation exists under GO #89 for Whitener.
