B-17G #42-31098 'Penny's Thunderhead' ran off the runway when the tire blew on landing on 26 Mar 1944. RTD.
On 13 April 1944, on a bombing mission to Schweinfurt he received a 20mm shell through his right leg. Despite his injury, Sergeant. Anderson refused to leave his radio. The leg was shattered so badly that it was later amputated at the 303rd station hospital. Sergeant Anderson was awaded the Silver Star for his part in that mission
