Carl D Scharf
Military"Iowans of the Mighty Eighth", Chapter 22 "Biographies", by Charles D Taylor.
He earned his wings and was commissioned in November 1943 picked up a B-24 in Topeka and flew it across to Nutts Corner in Ireland. Carl flew on 33 combat missions with the 392nd at Wendling - 15 of them as Deputy Lead. On returning to the States he flew a C-54 until separation in September 1945. He remained in the Reserve until retiring in 1981 with the rank of Lt. Colonel. In civilian life he was in farm equipment manufacturing and was an instructor at the Iowa Central Community College.
