4 February 1945 | The Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal and three Oak Leaf Clusters awarded to Captain Byron A. Evans were presented to his wife. Mrs. Mary P. Evans of McAllen, by Col. Frank Jamison at a ceremony which took place Friday during the formal retreat and review at Moore Field. Captain Evans, a member of the Eighth Fighter Command, is reported missing in action. "For extraordinary achievement In accomplishing fifty fighter combat missions over enemy occupied Continental Europe, the citation read which accompanied the DFC. "The skillful and zealous manner in which this officer had sought out the enemy and engaged him in aerial combat, his devotion to duty and courage under all conditions, serve as an inspiration to his fellow flyers, His actions on all these occasions reflect the highest credit upon himself and the armed forces of the United States." Bio in 1945: Enlisted in the Army at Fort Monroe, VA after spending two years at the University of Minnesota. At Fort Monroe he attended the Army Preparatory School and won by competitive examination appointment to West Point. He was graduated from West Point in 1942, a second lieutenant in the Coast Artillery Corps. He entered Air Corps training schools following his graduation with primary training at Grider Field, Pine Bluff, Ark. His basic training was given at Randolph Field, Texas, and his advanced course at Foster Field, Victoria, Texas. He then transferred to the Air Corps as pilot-officer. At Mitchell Field L. I. Captain Evans was assigned to the 360th Fighter Squadron. After special training in the summer of 1943, in the Thunderbolt P-47 plane, his outfit was sent to England in September 1943. He was decorated with the Air Medal, receiving his third cluster in January 1944. Captain Evans has a brother Lt. Col. Albert L. Evans Jr. who has been with the 80th fighter group in the 10th Air Force in India (Al commanded the Burma Banshees) and his father Albert L Evans Sr. was a retired colonel in 1943 with the Army. | ||
