Mertens; brothers, Paul, Robert, Elmer, John "Bud" and Russel "Jack" Mertens; and a sister, Dorothy Secoy. Dr. Mertens was a native of Cumberland and lived here his entire life. He graduated from Fort Hill High School in 1937 and served as a staff sergeant in the US Army Air Corps in World War II. He flew 35 combat missions and was awarded the Air Medal with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters and the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal. He earned his Doctorate of Chiropractic degree in 1952 from the Lincoln Chiropractic College, Indianapolis, and set up practice in Cumberland starting in April 1952. |
