Arthur Cappellett enlisted in the Army Air Corps on 29 May 1944 at Fort Dix, New Jersey. He was assigned to the 423rd Bomb Squadron, 306th Bomb Group as part of the Robert W. Davenport crew as a waist gunner on 5 April 1945. After VE day, he stayed with the 306th and was stationed at Istres, France (USAAF Station 196) as part of Operation Casey Jones - the aerial mapping of Europe.
