Evaded after shot down by fighters 4-Jul-43 in B-17 42-5792 'The Mugger'. With one engine on fire, plane crashed outside Malicorne-sur-Sarthe, France, where a monument was erected to Pilot Robert O'Connor and Bombardier Richard Peterson who were killed.
S/Sgt Carroll returned to Molesworth on 19-Oct-43 after a successful evasion from capture.
(confusion have been made before with Sgt Marvin W Carroll, killed in action on 22-Feb-44)
